Two ways to train

Gi and No Gi

To be a complete jiu jitsu player and move up through the belts, train both.

BJJ Gi

Tuesday and Thursday · 6:10pm

Trained in the traditional jacket, pants and belt. The grips make it slower and more technical, and it is the closest thing to defending yourself in everyday clothes.

BJJ No Gi

Monday and Wednesday · 6:10pm

Shorts and a rank rash guard instead of the gi. The pace is a little faster and the moves a bit more technical.

Step by step

What a class looks like

  1. Warm upMovement drills that build the hips, balance and breakfalls jiu jitsu needs.
  2. TechniqueThe coach shows a takedown, escape, pass or submission step by step.
  3. DrillingYou practise it with a partner until it starts to feel natural.
  4. RollingLive rounds to finish, called rolling. Go at a pace that suits you.

Start in any class

Beginners are welcome in every BJJ class. The coaches pair you with someone at your level, and everything is shown step by step.

Once you have the basics, the 6:15am open mats on Tuesday and Thursday are the best time to drill the week’s techniques and ask the senior belts questions.

Belts, white to black

Every belt is earned on the mats. Jiu jitsu belts carry four stripes each and are graded to the one Born To Roll standard, so your belt means the same at every club.

  • WhiteWhere everyone starts. Survive, escape and learn the basics.
  • BlueThe fundamentals are in. You can look after yourself.
  • PurpleTechnical and creative. Your own game takes shape.
  • BrownRefining every part of your game on the way to black.
  • BlackAround ten years of steady training, and still learning.

Questions

Do I need a gi for my first class?

No. Wear sports clothes without zips or pockets. You will need the club gi once you join and train in the Gi classes.

Is jiu jitsu good for self defence?

Yes. It teaches you to control someone bigger and stronger without needing to strike, which is why it sits at the heart of our kids classes too.

Am I too old or unfit to start?

No. People start jiu jitsu at every age and fitness level. Fitness comes from training, not before it.

How are belts graded?

Through the Born To Roll syllabus: four stripes on every belt, from white to black, so your rank means the same at every Born To Roll club.
